To those institutions planning to implement a (new) mobile guide, we offer consultancy in finding the best solution for their needs. Based on our previous experiences with cultural heritage institutions and our own development process, we created a reference framework which assists heritage institutions in the concept generation of a truly immersive mobile experience and in exploring the full potential of the medium.
This framework helps us to identify and value the various factors that take part in the complex context that constitutes a visit: the content presentation (narrative, game-based or information-based), location and environment (indoor or outdoor, subject of the exposition or tour, proximity of the objects), scale (duration of an average visit, extent of the museum or site), target audiences and so on.
We focus on three cornerstones – so called dimensions in our reference framework – to shape a mobile experience: interaction with the environment, personalization and social interaction. The dimensions of this reference framework can be propagated further and mapped on a set of non-functional requirements to be supported by the mobile technology. This approach supports cultural heritage institutions in selecting and deploying the appropriate mobile ICT solutions that lead to a real surplus value for their visitors.
We successfully used this framework for the conception, development and deployment of various mobile experiences, all of which were tailored for a very specific goal of the museum, a specific target group and a specific environment.
